If there is something I'm really excited to share to you guys, its the exotic dishes of the Philippines. These dishes may not be appetizing to others and as a matter of fact its an aquired taste, this is actually something I really enjoy back when I was in the Philippines. Lets say these dishes are best eaten with alcoholic beverages. I cant say I have tasted all of them but I must say they never fail to amaze me. We will be talking about the street foods of Manila and the exotic dishes from the provinces. I will try to get as much dishes to share with you and I hope you guys will give these dishes though bizarre, I promise its really worth tasting.
Isaw - isaw is made of pork or chicken intestine. I know it doesnt sound appetizing but these are really good. They cle
an the intestines by turning it inside out. They do this a couple of times to make sure no digested food is left in it. The process of cooking is simple. Its either boiled, boiled and barbecued or just grilled on sticks. Its best accompanied with vinegar, soy sauce, garlic and onion mixture as sauce. These are sold by street vendors in the Philippines.
Betamax - is made from pig's coagulated
blood and cut into cubes then scewered. Season with salt and pepper and thats it! Ready to barbecue. The taste is a little bit grainy and smokey of course from the grill. I like them well toasted because it has the crunch from the crust. Best serve with vinegar and soy sauce mixture as sauce.
Fishball - if there is a popular street food in the Philippines, I think fishball ranks in top 10. This is more people friendly when it comes to taste.
Usually made of cuttlefish, this dish is sold by vendor with a wooden cart with a built in stove so they cook them right in front of you. Talk about straight from the kitchen. Eaten with sweet and spicy sauce or black sweet sauce. I remember dashing out of the house when I see the vendor coming.
Balut - Philip
pines is famous for this dish, balut! It was even shown in Fear Factor as one of the dares. Honestly, it doesn't really taste bad. I can say I kind of enjoyed the taste. Though I only eat the yellow part which is the yolk or embryo. Balut is made from stillborn chick and they are boiled until well cooked. Filipinos believed that balut is good for your knees and as matter of fact, its also considered as an aphrodisiac. It takes skills to tell when the egg is ready for the munching. They do this by putting the egg against a bright light and checking if the egg is mature enough to be boiled and enjoyed as a filipino all time favorite.
